What would America be like if it could cut its oil consumption by 25% to50%, and what would happen to our economy if Americans had an additional 112-325 billion dollars to spend? Oil, gasoline and our economy all seem to be subjects that seem intertwined during these tough economic times. Ever since the price of gas went over 4 dollars a gallon the financial community has seen numerous companies claiming to have a solution for Americas fuel needs with very few success stories. Americas Current oil consumption is about 20 million BBL/day. During its peak the average price of oil over the course of a year was around $90 dollars a barrel. That means that the US was consuming more that 1.8 billion dollars in oil per day! That represents more than 657 billion dollars a year. So the question we have to ask ourselves is which solutions are viable and available to our society, and how can investors capitalize on these opportunities?

Can you imagine paying only $4 for every 200 miles you drive? Some of you reading might be thinking” here comes the ethanol program or the biodiesel solution”. Not at all! Ethanol did not work because the primary feed stock was corn and with people starving all over the world, turning corn into fuel caused corn prices to escalate and resulted in a worldwide outcry against this use of a food product. The biodiesel industry met much the same fate with the supply of feedstock initially coming from soy. The plan to use recycled yellow grease was never consistent to build a small refinery, much less make it a big business. The future of the automotive industry lies in the Electric Vehicle market also known as EV’s. A paradigm shift in the auto industry is on the horizon and investors should be watchful and consider allocating a portion of their portfolios towards automotive companies focusing on electric vehicles, especially any company that can provide technology solutions to revolutionize the Electric Car industry.

Signs that the auto industry will be taking this direction can be found in recent announcements by GM regarding their new Chevy Volt which will get 230 miles to the gallon. Another was discovered in a company by the name of Plug In Motors that was recently acquired and is being run a by Kurt Neutgens who was an engineer with Ford for 17 years. Kurt Neutgens, has developed a pure electric Mustang that can get as much as 200 miles to the charge. It goes 0-60 in 5.6 seconds, it has top speeds of 85-105 mph and it recharges in about an hour from a standard electrical outlet. Coincidentally, Plug In Motors is now teaming up with Imperial Coach Works a company operating under a QVM agreement with Ford to develop 100% electric limousines. An finally, the savviest and most respected investor of our age, Warren Buffet, has recently taken a 10% stake in BYD Company Limited. An investment valued at approximately $230 Million US Dollars.

Electric vehicles have virtually zero maintenance cost and can help consumers cut back on gasoline and any other liquid products that combustion engines require. Savings is what makes Electric Vehicles such an attractive solution for consumers. Aside from the companies and auto makers mentioned above, most of the major auto makers have recently announced plans for releasing their 100% electric vehicles in the next model year.
